Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) while visiting Lake Toba tourist resort in Sipinsur Geosite in Humbang Hasundutan District, North Sumatra Province, has emphasized the importance of protecting the environment of the lake and surrounding areas.

"Product improvement does not only concern the tourist site but also its environment that we must take care of," Jokowi said here on Monday.

A company which damages the environment will lose its business licence, he warned.

The government will decide which area is for tourism, which one is for the people, and which areas are for other purposes.

The development of the Lake Toba tourist resort will begin this year and is expected to be completed in one year. Supporting facilities and infrastructure to boost tourism in Lake Toba area have been constructed since 2018.

The investment for the Lake Toba development is worth Rp3.5 trillion and is allocated at the State Budget (APBN), according to the president in a press statement released by the Presidential Secretariat.

The government hopes to attract private investments whose values are expected three to five times bigger than the government's investment for Lake Toba.
Lake Toba and Samosir Island, which is located in the middle of the huge lake, offer a complete tourism package encompassing beautiful scenery, unique Batak culture and traditions, and intriguing history.

Located in North Sumatra Province, Lake Toba is indeed not just an ordinary lake but is the largest volcanic lake on Earth.

The ancient lake has been formed by a steep-walled caldera produced during the Toba volcano's eruption, the largest known volcanic eruption on the planet in the past two million years. The powerful eruption, an extremely rare event, is called a supervolcanic eruption.

When viewed from space, the Toba caldera is one of the most striking volcanic craters on Earth, measuring 100 x 30 kilometers.

The government has designated Lake Toba as one of ten priority tourist destinations being developed and promoted intensively.

The nine other priority tourist destinations are Tanjung Kelayang in Belitung, Tanjung Lesung in Banten, Thousand Islands in Jakarta, Borobudur Temple in Central Java, Mount Bromo in East Java, Mandalika in South Lombok, Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara, Wakatobi in Southeast Sulawesi, and Morotai in North Maluku.
