Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) - The late former president B.J. Habibie made valuable contributions to improving the competitive advantage of Indonesian products, economic observer Andry Satrio Nugroho of the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF) said. "Habibie started creating manufactured goods which have added value. The added value is research and technology," he said in Denpasar, Bali, Thursday.

The competitive advantage found in the concept of ‘Habibienomics’ changed the concept of the New Order which was more comparative advantage-oriented, he said.

The comparative advantage of the New Order was quite dependent on natural resources, while in fact, their deposits were not as large and durable, he said.

The concept of Habibienomics competitive advantage is still relevant today, he said.

Moreover, the current global economic development has changed quickly, including the trade war among countries, he said.

"This becomes the center of our attention as long as oil or mining serves as the main foundation of the state (revenues). In the event of a trade war, the two commodities may be affected. In fact, if we master technology, foreign companies will invest in Indonesia," he said.

Habibie was a visionary leader who had a high sense of nationalism, he said.

He was the main figure behind the production of domestic aircraft currently managed by state aircraft manufacturer PT Dirgantara Indonesia, the INDEF economist said.

Habibie, Indonesia's third president, passed away at the age of 83 on Wednesday evening at Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital (RSPAD) where he was undergoing treatment for a heart ailment since September 8.
