The government is committed to improving clean water access for the public across Indonesia
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Ministry has outlined a target to set up 10 million water pipe connections during the 2020-2024 period.

"For the 2020-2024 period, financing is planned for installing water pipe connections in 10 million households, with additional capacity of 85 thousand liters per second," Danis H.Sumadilaga, the ministry's director general, noted in a statement here on Friday.

The PUPR Ministry has offered support through the New Development System Program for Drinking Water Provision (SPAM), reaching 45,250 liters per second; the Existing SPAM Optimization Program, at 21,350 liters per second; and the Leakage Reduction Program, at 18,400 per second, he said, adding that an estimated Rp92.3 trillion will be required to build new water pipe connections in 10 million households.

PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono echoed the government’s commitment to improving access to clean water for all Indonesians.

Until late 2018, the percentage of Indonesia’s population having access to clean water had reached 73 percent, and this figure is expected to rise to 75 percent in 2019. By 2030, the coverage level is expected to reach 100 percent in line with the National Mid-term Development Plan of 2015-2019 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The central government has lent support to expedite the clean water supply program in regions since regional governments are obliged to provide access to clean water for the public.

Notably Rp253.8 trillion funds are required to provide 100 percent safe drinking water, of which 20 percent is expected to be sourced from the State Budget (APBN) while 80 percent from non-APBN sources.

The Commission V of the House of Representatives (DPR) has approved the allocation of Rp120.21 trillion in the Draft State Budget 2020 proposed by the ministry.

Of the ministry's total budget for 2020, Rp43.97 trillion will be channeled for developing infrastructure for water sources.
