Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin emphasized that the government will make sustained efforts to boost access to the work field for people with disabilities to ensure better welfare within the scope of their limitations.

"The government will continue to strive to improve access to basic services, such as education, health, and employment opportunities, for people with disabilities, as an effort to ensure the fulfillment of basic rights and to increase the dignity and independence of persons with disabilities," Vice President Amin remarked while attending the commemoration of International Disability Day (HDI) 2019 in Jakarta, Tuesday.

With an employment status and income, disabled people are expected to be able to lead an independent existence, with an increased level of welfare.

The VP further added that disabled people are much more susceptible to living below the poverty line owing to limited access and high expenditure burden.

"Data shows that people with disabilities are more likely to not go to school and have less opportunity to participate in the labor market. In addition, their spending rate is also 30 percent higher than other families," he expounded.

Amin revealed that the government had, in fact, set a budget for compensation for disabled people, but he believed that the number could be higher.

To this end, the government will offer continued support, so that people with disabilities can have access to employment opportunities to become independent.

He also praised private sector players that have offered work opportunities for disabled people. Specific treatment given by these employers includes stress management at the workplace and the application of production targets in line with their abilities.

"I got information on varied advice and special treatment given by the business community to empower workers with disabilities. Thank you to the business sector," he added. Related news: Moeldoko to assist disabled dentist recover her rights
