Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's capital city Jakarta extended the closing period of its tourism areas to April 19 in the race to contain the growing threat of COVID-19 whose cases in the city reached 1,071 until Saturday.

"The policy is effective for 17 days in a bid to contain the transmission of coronavirus that caused COVID-19 (coronavirus disease)," Cucu Ahmad Kurnia, head of Jakarta's Tourism and Creative Economy Office, noted in a statement here on Saturday.

The Jakarta administration had earlier closed the tourism centers from March 23 to April 5.

"We called on all operators of the tourism industry to adhere to the policy to extend the closure period," he remarked.

Beauty salons, sports amusement centers, night clubs, discotheques, pubs, karaoke, spas, and movie theatres were among those closed.

The Jakarta administration has issued Circular No. 184/2020 on extending the closure period of tourism centers to halt the further spread of COVID-19.

The policy was a follow up to the Jakarta governor's decision to extend the emergency status of COVID-19, effective from April 3 to April 19, 2020.

Jakarta’s health authorities confirmed 1,071 COVID-19 positive cases as of Saturday. The number of fatalities caused by the disease has reached 87, while the number of people having recovered has increased to 46. Related news: Chamber provide 100,000 rapid test kits to DKI Jakarta Government
