Solo, C Java (ANTARA) - Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo symbolically distributed packages of essentials to thousands of workers laid off and on unpaid leave over the COVID-19 pandemic during the commemoration of International Labor Day in Boyolali District, Friday.

Pranowo expressed gratitude to the workers for their patience to face an unprecedented situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mental peace, solidity, brotherhood, solidarity, and mutual help are the cornerstones in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, he stated.

The government is mulling over ways to help those reeling from the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic, he stated, adding that the COVID-19 outbreak had not shown signs of abating, but it had begun to ease steadily, he remarked.

Pranowo urged the people of Central Java to pray to Allah, so that the public can resume regular activities at the earliest.

The governor is optimistic that the packages to meet basic needs would proffer a sense of security and comfort to the workers for the month ahead.

Chief of the Boyolali District Cooperatives and Manpower Office M. Syawaludin stated that the survival of several companies hinged in the balance in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Syawaludin remarked that the number of workers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic had touched 7,476, comprising 1,722 workers laid off by 16 companies and 3,703 workers of five companies compelled to take unpaid leave.
