Jakarta (ANTARA) - The heads of families have an important role to play in helping other family members protect themselves from the novel coronavirus disease and prevent its transmission, said government spokesperson for COVID-19 handling, Achmad Yurianto.

"The head of family has the role of modeling healthy behavior for family members, which is the basis of everything. We should realize it," Achmad Yurianto said at a video conference at the Graha Office of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Jakarta, on Thursday.

Yurianto said the head of the family is a role model in the smallest structure of a community.

"Efforts to stop COVID-19 pandemic must be community-based,” he remarked.

Yurianto said religious and traditional leaders also play an important role in helping community members understand the seriousness of the situation and carry out efforts to break the chain of COVID-19 transmission.

"The figures in the community are also key in terms of changing people's behavior," he continued.

Efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19 that can be undertaken by the community include washing hands using soap and running water, using masks, and returning home as soon as possible if venturing out of the house, and keeping a safe distance from other people when outside the house.

"We can avoid (getting exposed to) direct droplets (and contracting an infection) by maintaining a safe distance of 1 to 2 meters," Yurianto pointed out.

"If you are forced to leave the house, limit your time, avoid large crowds of people, avoid jostling in public transportation, and clean yourself after getting home as soon as possible," he advised.

He also asked the public not to return to their hometowns.

"People are advised to stay at home," he stated.
