Jakarta (ANTARA) - People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Chairman Bambang Soesatyo urged Joko Widodo's government and House of Representatives (DPR) to complete deliberation of the Personal Data Protection Bill following repeated hacking of government websites and personal data breaches.

"In addition to improving the infrastructure, it aims to streamline data protection systems, comply with information system security standardization, and also strengthen regulations and sanctions pertaining to data leakage," Soesatyo noted in a statement here on Tuesday.

The MPR chairman sought greater literacy in communication and information technology from state institutions and organizations for a broader understanding of data and information security to prevent incidents of hacking from recurring in future.

Soesatyo also encouraged the government to develop and test the system, particularly in the context of securing data and information before it was used in the public interest.

"This is especially crucial based on the fact that current hackers are also increasingly varied and are advancing," he stated.

Moreover, the MPR chairman urged the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) to channel greater attention to the standards of information system security that refer to ISO 27001 on Information Security Management Systems, particularly in government institutions.

As of Tuesday, the Indonesian Police’s Criminal Investigation Department apprehended a perpetrator, with the initials as ADC, for purportedly hacking 1,309 sites belonging to state institutions, educational institutions, and scientific journals, including the Badilum (Supreme Court) site, the Sleman District Court, and the Central Java provincial government.

Recently, a hacker claimed of having acquired personal data of some 91 million users of e-commerce platform Tokopedia and put up the data for sale on the Dark Web for US$5,000.

This is the second instance of data breach concerning personal data of Topopedia users following the May leak incident. Related news: Tokopedia notifies authorities of third party over data breach
