Pontianak, West Kalimantan (ANTARA) - A whirlwind struck two sub-districts in Pontianak, West Kalimantan Province, leaving a path of destruction and causing damage to some 300 homes on Friday (July 17), Pontianak Mayor Edi Rusdi Kamtono stated.

"Based on the latest data that I received, some 300 houses incurred light, moderate, or severe damage," the mayor stated here on Monday.

West Pontianak and North Pontianak were the sub-districts affected by the whirlwind, he remarked.

The Pontianak municipal administration will provide building materials, such as zinc and rafters, to residents whose homes incurred damage owing to the strong wind.

The whirlwind also led to power outage in several areas affected by the disaster.

The mayor urged the residents of Pontianak City to be cognizant of likely rains accompanied by whirlwind.

"It is possible that the same occurrence can also be observed in other regions," he stated.

In the meantime, major floods swamped parts of the provinces of Southeast Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, and West Papua. In North Luwu, South Sulawesi, flash floods claimed 32 lives and rendered 16 others missing.

Some 1,590 residents were affected by the flooding, Mustari, Head of the Makassar Search and Rescue Office (Basarnas), stated.
A joint search and rescue team, comprising 539 people, was deployed to evacuate the flood victims. The flash floods also injured dozens of people and displaced 3,500 families.

In Sorong, West Papua, a flood and landslide that struck on Thursday (July 16) claimed the lives of four people while caused injuries to three residents, according to the Sorong Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD). Of the four dead victims, three were buried by the landslide, whereas one was electrocuted, Sorong BPBD Head Herlin Sasabone reported.

In Konawe District, floods submerged thousands of homes in 49 villages, 16 sub-districts in Konawe District, Southeast Sulawesi Province, following incessant heavy rains over the past one week.

Floodwaters, reaching heights of up to 120 centimeters, affected a total of 2,719 households comprising 8,314 people, Herianto Pagala, head of the Konawe disaster mitigation office (BPBD), stated on Saturday.
