Government Regulation No. 35 is a form of the commitment of President Joko Widodo's administration to protect Indonesian citizens, who fell victim to gross human rights violations and criminal acts of terrorism, both at home and abroadJakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo signed Government Regulation (PP) No. 35/2020 on amendment of PP No. 7/2018 on compensation, restitution, and support for witnesses and victims to protect Indonesian victims of gross human rights violations and terrorism.
Presidential spokesperson for Legal Affairs Dini Shanti Purwono noted in his statement on Monday that President Widodo had signed PP No. 35 of 2020 on July 7, 2020, and was promulgated on July 8, 2020.
"Government Regulation No. 35 is a form of the commitment of President Joko Widodo's administration to protect Indonesian citizens, who fell victim to gross human rights violations and criminal acts of terrorism, both at home and abroad," Purwono explained.
The government regulation stipulates that the state covers all real losses incurred by victims.
The protection offered can be in the form of compensation, medical assistance, and psychological rehabilitation.
"The government understands the difficulties and sadness experienced by the families, who are victims of acts of terrorism. Hence, this regulation is renewed to ease the burden on the victims' families in terms of the economy," Purwono noted.
The request to obtain compensation can be submitted by those falling victim to criminal acts of terrorism, their families, or their heirs through the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK).
The request can be submitted from the commencement of the investigation of criminal acts of terrorism and no later than before the examination of the defendant.
"The LPSK will determine the amount of compensation to be calculated," Purnowo remarked.
