Riau Islands (ANTARA) - Four public health service posts (puskesmas) in Batam City, Riau Islands Province, were shut down after several of their medical and administrative workers as well as ambulance drivers contracted the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
The four public health service posts are Puskesmas Tiban Baru, Puskesmas Mentarau, Puskesmas Sei Langkai and Puskesmas Nongsa, Head of the Batam City Health Office Didi Kusmarjadi stated here on Friday.
In line with a plan, the four public health service posts will be closed for 14 days to break the chain of COVID-19 transmission.
Dozens of medical workers serving at puskesmas were found to have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past week.
On Thursday, five nurses, two dentists, an assistant pharmacist, two ambulance drivers, and several administrative workers of puskesmas tested positive for COVID-19.
"Most of the medical workers are from (Puskesmas) Tiban (Baru) and some from other Puskesmas," he remarked.
Kusmarjadi pointed out that since the medical workers wore personal protective equipment while performing their duties, there was a small possibility of them having contracted the virus from patients.
The public health service posts have in stock a relatively sufficient number of personal protective equipment, he noted.
Kusmarjadi further appealed to the public to abide by health protocols to avoid exposure to COVID-19.
