The Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI) voiced its opposition to the government's program to certify Islamic preachers in the country, MUI Deputy Chairman KH Muhyiddin Junaidi stated.
"The MUI rejects the program," he affirmed here on Tuesday.
Consequently, an uproar has arisen in the community amid concerns over the government's intervention in implementing the program.
The community is apprehensive of governmental intervention in religious aspects through the Islamic preacher certification program, he pointed out.
"Implementation of the program can create difficulties for Muslims and will potentially offer an opportunity to certain circles to misuse it to control religious life," Junaidi stated.
The MUI deputy chairman expounded that the MUI's stance aligns with the decision taken at the council's leadership meeting held on Tuesday (Sept 9).
The MUI comprehends the significance of a program to boost the competencies of Islamic preachers as part of the endeavors to expand their outlook, especially pertaining to religious materials, such as the sharia economy, halal products, and national outlook.
However, implementation of the program must be left entirely on mass organizations and Islamic institutions, including the MUI, and other parties authorized to certify Islamic preachers, he noted.
"To this end, the MUI calls on all sides to not be quick to link radicalism to ulemas, Islamic preachers, and hafizh based on their physical appearances," he added.
