Timika, Papua (ANTARA) - Papuan rescuers evacuated four of the eight crew of MV Adi Utama, Sunday evening, after it got stranded in the estuary of Agats, Asmat District’s capital, a local Search and Rescue Agency's (SAR's) official stated.

The cargo vessel, carrying building materials, got stranded after a leak developed in its stern during its voyage from the Pomako Seaport in Timika, Mimika District, to Agats in Asmat District, Head of SAR Agency-Timika Office Monce Brury stated here on Monday.

Four other crew members stayed aboard the ship whilst attempting to fix the leak by pumping sea water out of the ship, Brury remarked, adding that the survivors are identified as the skipper Rusli as well as Jakir, Laka, Muhsaki, Anto, Safarudin, Jabarudin, and Akmal, the crew.

For Asmat people residing on muddy, soft, and swampy ground circled by a river, the only accessibility possible was through a motor vessel, he pointed out.
