Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government urged 20 of the world's largest economies (G20) to work together to ensure market stability and energy supply amid the global challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“COVID-19 has created an economic crisis and reduced energy demand. We recommend that all G20 (members) work hand in hand to ensure the stability of the energy market and maintain (supply) affordability. Indonesia really prioritizes this,” said Energy and Mineral Resources Minister, Arifin Tasrif, in a written statement received in Jakarta on Monday.

To overcome problems in the energy sector, he continued, Indonesia is promoting New and Renewable Energy (EBT) as an investment recovery project. "Indonesia is preparing a breakthrough policy that is more environmentally friendly for investors," he remarked.

Concrete steps are being taken by the Indonesian government to strengthen collaborative data in the broader and more transparent energy sector through the existing platform, namely the Joint Organization Data Initiative (JODI).

"This (data) collaboration will improve the quality and transparency of data and information. This will certainly stimulate energy investment," Tasrif said.

JODI is an initiative to provide open global energy data, which is the result of a collaboration between six international organizations and their member countries, namely the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), Statistical Office of the European Communities (Eurostat), Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), International Energy Agency (IEA), Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE), Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), and the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), which are being coordinated under the secretariat of the International Energy Forum.

The initial formation of JODI was intended for global oil data and it began to expand its scope to the gas sector in 2008. At the G20 Energy Sustainability Working Group (ESWG) meeting in 2020, member countries had expressed the hope that the scope of JODI could be expanded further to cover all energy sectors. (INE)
