Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Research and Technology, Bambang PS Brodjonegoro, has said he supports strict law enforcement against illegal disposal of radioactive waste, which can threaten public safety.

“We hope for strict law enforcement against anyone who violates protocols or regulations on radioactive waste disposal,” said Minister Brodjonegoro at an online event on the Declaration of Status Clearance of the Batan Indah Housing Complex, held from Jakarta on Thursday.

Radioactive waste management must be carried out by following the procedures that have been established, Brodjonegoro said adding, such waste cannot be carelessly thrown into landfills as that would cause radiation, which can be detrimental to public health.

Radioactive waste must be handled properly and appropriately by competent and authorized parties, he stressed.

Radioactive waste management is currently being carried out at the Center for Radioactive Waste Technology (PTLR) under the National Nuclear Energy Agency (Batan) in the Research Center for Science and Technology (Puspiptek) area, Serpong.

“There are procedures on the disposal of radioactive waste, and these procedures must be followed, especially (when it comes) to the Radioactive Waste Technology Center in Puspitek. It cannot be done carelessly or in such ways that violate procedures. Therefore, law enforcement is important," he explained.

Law enforcement will be supported through supervision of the use of nuclear energy, which will be carried out more intensively by the Nuclear Energy Supervisory Agency (Bapeten), he added.

The security and safety of nuclear reactors in the Puspiptek area must always be guaranteed by the National Nuclear Energy Agency, he stated.

"If someone should understand and decide to use (radioactive substances), but not dispose of (radioactive waste) properly, then there must be law enforcement measures," he continued. (INE)
