In the development of renewable energy, we cannot walk alone on account of the complex challenges faced in energy transition.Jakarta (ANTARA) - Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Arifin Tasrif underscored the significance of international cooperation to facilitate the transition of energy and development of renewable energy.
"In the development of renewable energy, we cannot walk alone on account of the complex challenges faced in energy transition. International cooperation is required to support Indonesia to become self-reliant and capable of competing in the global energy industry," Tasrif noted in a statement here on Wednesday.
The minister pointed out that the COVID-19 pandemic had sparked an economic slowdown, cut energy demand, and slackened the pace of transition to clean and sustainable energy.
To this end, Tasrif highlighted the need to align energy production with the current scenario while calling for the need to create new opportunities.
"Indonesia has a mission to shift from conventional energy to renewable energy. Hence, Indonesia has set the renewable energy development and energy conservation target, as mandated in the National Energy Policy and Nationally Determined Contribution submitted to the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change)," he explained.
The government has implemented the requisite regulation and action plans in various sub-sectors to achieve the target, with support of activities in capacity building and research. Indonesia has striven to apply a more prudent method in energy business, so that the national energy industry can compete in the global market.
Currently, Indonesia is boosting the use of renewable energy for electricity, applying an energy management system for industry and building, and developing CPO-based green fuel project targeted to commence production in 2023.
"Indonesia is developing its first floating solar power plant in Cirata at the reservoir of a hydropower plant. A combination of floating solar PV and hydropower plant is aimed at mitigating solar PV intermittence while concurrently benefiting the water reservoir surface area of the Cirata hydropower plant. We do not need land release," he elaborated.
To support low-carbon development, the government has imposed various energy efficiency programs, including mandatory energy management and Minimum Energy Performance Standards.
Indonesia has adopted the national standard on energy management that will gradually become the national standard for the industry.
