Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian universities have continued to innovate amid the pandemic with lecturers and students undertaking research and development to find ways to handle infections and curb coronavirus transmission, said Minister of Education and Culture, Nadiem Anwar Makarim.

“Since distance learning has been implemented in universities to prevent the spread of COVID-19, lecture activities have continued to yield innovations,” he said during a webinar in Jakarta on Wednesday.

“This is truly extraordinary. How touched and proud the nation is for the persistence of students and lecturers in carrying out real actions of mutual cooperation, helping each other,” he added.

He further informed that the innovations from lecturers and students from various universities have been mass produced, including the RIGHA rapid diagnostic test kits, robots to help treat COVID-19 patients in educational hospitals, and ventilators.

"Our students are also carrying out community service activities. Since April, no less than 15,000 students have participated as volunteers to mitigate the pandemic through the National COVID-19 Recon or Volunteer program," he observed.

Additionally, thousands of students have participated in the Pioneer Teaching Campus program, helping elementary school students learn and carry out thematic real-work courses since June this year, he added.

Students, he continued, have also carried out their duties as agents of behavior change by inviting the public and fellow students to follow health protocols to prevent the transmission of the coronavirus. The protocols include wearing masks, maintaining a safe distance, washing hands with soap, and avoiding crowds.
