Jakarta (ANTARA) - Head of the DKI Jakarta Transportation Office, Syafrin Liputo, is stationing patrol officers in the city's cycling lanes to prevent incidents of bicycle mugging.

"Today, for instance, Transportation Agency officers are on guard at the intersection along Sudirman and MH Thamrin Road. We are optimistic that their presence would have a deterrent affect against the perpetrators behind mugging incidents," Liputo stated upon confirmation from Jakarta, Friday.

Liputo spoke of his office having constantly conducted patrols, although the operations tended to be dynamic in nature, as the members would have to be mobile around the designated areas.

The office head was optimistic of assistance from routine patrol officers from the police or military forces.

"We are optimistic of intense supervision being conducted in other areas, along with the police and military forces," he stated.

Incidents of mugging wherein bicycle riders were targeted in Jakarta have risen in October this year.

Such cases were reported in three different areas in the city: West Jakarta, Central Jakarta, and South Jakarta.

To address the issue of prevalence of bicycle muggers, DKI Jakarta Deputy Governor Ahmad Riza Patria urged the public to activate the community Mobile Security System (Siskamling) as part of the precautionary measures.

The Central Jakarta and South Jakarta Police have also readied specially designated personnel to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents. Related news: Minister predicts rapid growth of Indonesia bicycle industry
