Natuna, Riau Islands (ANTARA) - The National Defense Forces (TNI) will build a main naval base and combat command in Natuna district, Riau Islands province next year, Riau Islands acting governor Bahtiar Baharuddin revealed on Friday.

TNI Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto has notified the Naval Security Board (Bakamla), the commander of the Tanjungpinang Main Naval Base IV, and the Riau Islands governor of the plan to build the facilities in writing, he said.

"We have received a written notification. The regional government fully supports it," he added.

He lauded the TNI chief's decision to build a main naval base and combat command in Natuna, Indonesia’s outlying islands bordering China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Singapore.

The presence of the naval base and combat command will increase defense and security in the disputed Natuna waters in the South China Sea, Baharuddin said.

In addition, the presence of the naval base and combat command will curb rampant illegal fishing in Natuna waters, he added.

Above all, investors will feel secure and find it convenient to invest in Natuna, if defense and security in the area is strengthened, he said.

“Natuna is rich in natural resources and has beautiful scenery. I believe many investors will be interested in investing there,” he remarked.
