That way, in the future, (the youth) can elevate the quality of mitigation and evacuation measures against climate disasters
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Environment and Forestry, Alue Dohong, has urged the Indonesian youth to join the climate change movement as they will be the ones to bear the burden of rising greenhouse gas emissions.

Speaking to participants at the 2020 Indonesia Youth Climate Summit, Deputy Minister Dohong said that all sections of the public, including the youth, need to pay attention to issues involving climate change and take early anticipative and adaptive actions.

"That way, in the future, (the youth) can elevate the quality of mitigation and evacuation measures against climate disasters," he remarked at the event held by the ministry's Directorate General of Climate Change Control from Jakarta on Monday.

As a strategic stakeholder in realizing the targets set under the international climate control pact, the Paris Agreement, which was ratified by Indonesia in 2016, the ministry sees the importance of the contribution of youth as strategic partners in handling climate change, he observed.

Lauding the summit, he said he believes it can serve as a hub for spread of information and exchange of youth aspirations, which, in turn, can be used as a reference for tangible action to prevent the adverse effects of climate change.

He said he hopes the youth would further promote sustainability through lifestyle changes.

Future generations are also expected to become agents of change, thereby ensuring that information regarding climate change anticipation and adaptation can be spread further, he added.

"Climate change will become a determining factor in the evolution of the world in the next coming decades, and without exceptions, the youth hold important roles in this crisis. They will be burdened with great responsibilities, especially the future generations," he remarked.

He then urged the youth to work with the government and other stakeholders to address the rising complexities of climate change by meeting the targets set under the sustainable development goals and the Paris Agreement. (INE)
