Jakarta (ANTARA) - Rector of IPB University, Prof. Dr. Arif Satria, on Thursday lauded the achievements made by Indonesian students at the Indonesia Talent Achievement Awarding 2020.

“I am amazed at these children’s works. They tried to come out of the grip [of problems] to realize their dream through their works and innovations. If all people have future practice and creativity spirit, I believe Indonesia will become an advanced nation,” he said, while virtually attending the event organized by the National Achievement Center at the Education and Culture Ministry.

In addition to expressing pride in the students' achievements and congratulating them on their ideas, the chief of the Indonesian Rectors Forum (FRI) also spoke with the winners, the IPB University said in a statement released on Thursday.

One of the winners with whom the IPB rector spoke was Muhtaza Aziziya Syafiq, who invented a non-electric refrigerator during the second year of senior high school.

Syafiq’s invention earned him an award at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), held in Los Angeles (US) in May, 2014, for the invention.

The limited access to electricity in Musi Banyuasin district, South Sumatra where Syafiq lives inspired him to invent the non-electric refrigerator.

Another winner, Akhmad Zailani, a second grade student of Kandangan vocational school, bagged a gold medal in landscape and gardening at a national student skills contest in 2020.

Dr. Arif also spoke with Joan Nadia, a student of IPEKA vocational school in Tomang, Jakarta, who won a silver medal in the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) Challenge, which was held in Japan in August this year.
