Our scenario showed that a green and low carbon economy could result in sustainable economic development in future.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia must make green economy the primary goal of its economic transformation, Minister of National Development Planning and head of the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), Suharso Monoarfa, has said.

"We need (to bring about) economic transformation, boost development, and increase the level of Indonesia's economy, in both the medium and long term, but with awareness and global support, to achieve a sustainable economic recovery," Monoarfa stressed at the online Indonesia Net-Zero Summit 2021, originating from here on Tuesday.

To achieve this, Indonesia must list a green economy or low carbon economy as one of the main goals of its economic transformation, he said.

"Our scenario showed that a green and low carbon economy could result in sustainable economic development in future, and, at the same time, help Indonesia to exit the middle-income trap," the minister elaborated.

To save Indonesia's golden generation in 2045 and to mitigate the impact of climate change, the nation would need to promote relevant policies on net-zero emissions or low carbon economy, the minister said.

Meanwhile, former environment minister Emil Salim said the country needs to formulate a negative emissions policy.

"The world has produced 51 billion tons of greenhouse gases in 2021. The impact is clear on climate change as greenhouse gas emissions have increased the temperature on Earth's surface," he pointed out.

Therefore, the policy should ensure zero emissions by 2050 to prevent future temperature changes, he said. (INE)
