We ourselves strongly urge such an approach, one of the targets is public markets.Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), as part of Earth Day commemorations, urged public markets to help promote a lifestyle centered on shopping without packaging, just like several emerging bulk stores have done.
“We ourselves strongly urge such an approach, one of the targets is public markets,” director of waste management at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Novrizal Tahar, said during a talk show on ‘Shopping without Packaging Life Style’ here on Thursday.
Public markets are essentially similar to bulk stores or modern grocery stores, which already sell products without packaging, he noted.
The ministry will involve the civil society to help implement a lifestyle of shopping without packaging, he added.

“Hence, we are optimally striving to maintain the style of public markets that basically sell groceries. Recently, public markets have been using plastic bags for groceries, now we are trying to turn the habit back (to selling goods without plastic bags/packaging),” he highlighted.
According to the ministry, grocery stores that provide no packaging contribute to shaping a consumer culture based on waste reduction.
The progress made by groceries stores in reducing packaging is in line with the government’s attempts, it added. The ministry said it expects the effort to be simultaneously followed by producers in pursuit of sustainable development for a green future.
