Jakarta (ANTARA) - The number of companies following environmentally friendly principles has shown an increase, which indicates key progress in efforts towards meeting the sustainable development goals (SDGs), according to the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas).

"There has been an increase in the number of companies applying environmentally friendly principles, as reflected by 32 companies being awarded gold medals under the Program for Assessing the Performance of Companies in Managing the Environment (PROPER) at the national level," Bappenas deputy for maritime affairs and natural resources, Arifin Rudiyanto, said at a webinar on ‘Building Indonesia through Sustainable Businesses’, originating from here on Thursday.

PROPER is a government instrument that focuses on environmental issues in corporate arrangement, he said.

Speaking on behalf of Bappenas head Suharso Monoarfa at the webinar, Rudiyanto said at the global level, Danone has gained global accreditation for its environmentally friendly practices.

In addition, six companies have secured certificates of green industry from the Indonesian government, he disclosed. Meanwhile, the number of companies submitting sustainability reports has reached nearly 100, he added.

"As we know, the OJK (Financial Services Authority) necessitates publicly listed companies to submit a sustainability report," he said.

The number of goods and services receiving eco-labeling is also on the increase, he added.

The National Certification Agency (BSN) has introduced a certification system with various requirements, in accordance with ISO 26000:2010 internationally.

This year, Indonesia has entered the last decade for meeting the SDG targets of 2020. Since the issuance of Presidential Regulation No. 59/2017 on the attainment of SDGs, 52 out of 280 SDG indicators have shown progress, Rudiyanto said.

Nearly 18 percent of the indicators have improved, while 30 percent of indicators still need special attention, he added. (INE)
