Jakarta (ANTARA) - Globalization and the development of science and technology (IPTEK) are potential threats to national defense and security, according to Vice President Ma'ruf Amin.

"Globalization and the developments in science and technology that occur not only have a positive impact but also become a potential threat to state defense and security," the vice president remarked in Sentul, West Java, on Friday.

Vice President Amin conveyed the statement while attending the 21st Century National Conference on People's Defense and Security System (Sishankamrata) at the Sentul Defense University, West Java, on Friday.

"The defense and security challenges faced by Indonesian people today are quite heavy," the vice president remarked.

The COVID-19 pandemic is also one of the global threats that must be watched out for, he stressed.

The vice president urged the defense and security sector to strengthen its system to protect the nation, state, and all Indonesian citizens.

"In the wake of global (COVID-19) cases that have not shown a significant decline, the role of the defense and security sector is becoming increasingly important to strengthen. Various possibilities must be anticipated," he emphasized.

Meanwhile, Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto remarked that the implementation of Sishankamrata was aimed at producing strategic documents for the nation’s defense and security today.

"This initial conference was aimed at producing a strategic document. After I studied it and corrected it, the resulting product is quite satisfactory, actually with the conditions of the 21st century," the minister noted.

Subianto is also sanguine that various recommendations and proposals from the Sishankamrata Conference would become a law that would serve as a guiding beacon for all institutions.

"It is recommended that this product be shaped into a law for our country, so that it can be used as a guide by all state institutions," Subianto stated.
