Fate of Papua's 30 construction workers still hangs in balance

Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Military was yet unable to give any confirmation on the condition of some 30 construction workers in Yahukimo District, Papua, after being attacked by an armed group in Bingki Village on June 24, 2021.

Chief of the Sub-regional Military Command (Korem) 172/PWY Brig. Gen. Izak Pangemanan stated here on Friday that seven workers managed to escape the attack and reached Swator in Asmat District.

"We are still monitoring (the situation), and the TNI-Polri personnel are attempting to evacuate the victims," Pangemanan noted.

He could not as yet confirm whether the armed group had taken the local residents as hostage.

"Our personnel are still collecting data and attempting to evacuate the victims," he affirmed.

Unidentified gunmen fatally shot PT Papua Crenoma’s five employees that were engaged in constructing a bridge over the Kali Wit River in Yahukimo District of Papua Province on Thursday.

The armed group attacked and shot at a building material-carrying truck owned by PT Papua Crenoma.

The gunmen also attacked civilians, who built a villager's house, killing four of them and head of the village Obaja Nang.


In early December 2018, Papua's armed group killed 31 construction workers building Kali Yigi-Kali Aurak bridge in Nduga District.

On June 3, 2021, a construction worker was also murdered in Eronggobak, Ilaga, Puncak, Papua.
