Commander of the Banyuwangi District Military Command Lt Col Inf Yuli Eko confirmed that the joint search and rescue (SAR) team had found 33 passengers alive.
“Based on provisional data that we have received from the Gilimanuk Port Authority (KSOP), six people lost their lives, 33 people survived, and 14 others are still missing,” he noted.
The motor vessel, MV Yanicee, reportedly carried 41 passengers and 12 crew members upon departure from the Ketapang ferry port in Banyuwangi, East Java, en route to the Gilimanuk ferry port in Bali, Eko noted.
MV Yunicee supposedly sank after being swept away by sea currents to the south while waiting to moor at the Gilimanuk ferry port.
By Tuesday night, the joint SAR team was still conducting search for the 14 missing passengers.
Meanwhile, Chief of the Jembrana Police Resort Adjunct Senior Commissioner I Ketut Gede Adi Wibawa stated that the bodies of six passengers, comprising three men and three women, were taken to the Negara General Hospital in Bali.
The police resort has prepared a command post at the Gilimanuk ferry port to facilitate the evacuation of victims of the sunken vessel.
“We have set up a command post at the Gilimanuk port. In addition, preparations are being made at the local public health service post (puskesmas) and Negara General Hospital,” he remarked.
The police had also prepared rooms at the port to accommodate those who survived in the incident.
