Putussibau, West Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Two villages in Kalis Sub-district, Kapuas Hulu District, West Kalimantan Province, were struck by flash floods that caused extensive damage to residential areas and public facilities, including a suspension bridge.

Flash floods inundated the villages of Ribang Kadang and Nanga Sestar on Wednesday night at around 7 p.m. local time, and the flood current almost dragged a girl, who was fortunately saved by local residents.

"The flash floods lasted for about two hours and damaged several public facilities. A girl was also swept away by the currents, but she could be rescued," Head of the Kapuas Hulu Regional Disaster Mitigation office (BPBD) Gunawan remarked after inspecting the locations affected by the flash flooding in Putussibau, the capital city of Kapuas Hulu on Thursday.

The flash floods were triggered by heavy rains lashing since Wednesday.

At least 100 families in the two villages were affected by the flooding, he noted.

"We will coordinate with other technical regional apparatus organizations regarding the condition of Ribang Kadang and Nanga Sestar villages that were affected by flash floods," according to Gunawan.
