Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin has urged Indonesian citizens to stop relying on imported products and start building self-sufficiency and economic independence by supporting local products.

"We need to 'hijra' (migrate) from our dependence on imported products. Let us be self-sufficient and independent in our economy," Amin said in his opening remarks, which were delivered virtually on the Islamic New Year festival in West Sumatra province on Tuesday.

He lauded the recent developments of the Islamic financial and economic sector in West Sumatra province, saying it was evidence that West Sumatra was on its way to improving its economy.

"I have already seen the vigorous effort of the West Sumatra people to enhance the Islamic economics and financial system in the region. God willing, the effort would benefit West Sumatra residents, particularly for their economy and prosperity," he said.

Evoking the Islamic concept of "hijra", Vice President Amin said that each Muslim must give due importance to striving to improve living standards.

He said that he hoped the spirit of "hijra" would inspire Indonesian Muslims to transform the nation into a better place to live in and free the country of poverty, ignorance, and backwardness.
