Through washing plants, the quality of the salt can be improved with its NaCl content reaching 97 percent and its color becoming whiter.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The installation of salt washing plants can help add value to salt farms by increasing their yield, according to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fishery (KKP).

"Through washing plants, the quality of the salt can be improved with its NaCl content reaching 97 percent and its color becoming whiter," acting director general of ocean management at the ministry, Pamuji Lestari, said in a press statement here on Wednesday.

According to Lestari, the construction of washing plants and national salt storages (GGN) through the salt economic centre is part of the KKP's program to empower salt farmers.

He said that he has surveyed the GGN and washing plant location in Indramayu district, West Java.

The program that has been implemented in Krangkeng, Indramayu district, West Java, is an upstream to downstream salt development concept, starting from pre-production, production, post-production to selling, he informed.

"The washing plant in Indramayu is one of the seven washing plants built by KKP through the National Economic Recovery (PEN) 2020 fund," Lestari said.

As per data provided by Indramayu's Maritime and Fishery Service, the previous average production of salt in Indramayu was 60 tons per hectare each season, he pointed out.

However, ever since KKP started to assist, average production has reached 130 tons per hectare each season, he said.

Lestari affirmed KKP's commitment to boost production and improve the quality of citizens' salt by providing mentorship.

"We hope that this could continue, not just in Indramayu, but also in several other locations, in accordance with the directive from the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, to improve salt farmers prosperity and development of People's Salt Enterprises," he remarked.
