Malang, East Java (ANTARA) - At least 10 thousand students aged 12 and above in the Malang city area, East Java have been administered the COVID-19 vaccine, according to the Malang Education and Culture Office.

Twenty-two percent of 45 thousands students aged 12 and above have been vaccinated against COVID-19 so far, head of the Malang Education and Culture Office, Suwarjana, said here on Monday.

"There are approximately 45 thousand children (students), and some 10 thousand have been vaccinated against COVID-19," he informed.

The students comprise 40 thousand junior high school students and five thousand elementary school students, he added.

Suwarjana said that his office is targeting to vaccinate all Malang students in the targeted age group by September this year.

Although vaccination is not the only requirement to conduct limited face-to-face learning activities, he said his office has continued to try to vaccinate students.

The Malang Education and Culture Office has collaborated with a number of stakeholders to carry out vaccinations for students, including the Health Polytechnic of the Malang Health Ministry and some campuses, he informed.

"People don't need to worry. People who have children in Malang will all be vaccinated, whether they attend public or private schools," he assured.

Furthermore, he said his office is targeting to vaccinate 2,000-2,500 students aged 12 and above every day. Each school must submit student data to the Malang Education and Culture Office, he added.

"The implementation is in accordance with the readiness to submit valid data to us. Don't worry, everyone will get vaccinated," he said.

Limited face-to-face learning activities have begun in Malang, under the implementation of strict health protocols. Currently, Malang City is under Level 3 Community Activity Restrictions (PPKM).

A total 15,044 confirmed COVID-19 cases have been recorded in Malang. Of the patients, 13,641 have recovered, 1,097 have died, and the rest are still undergoing treatment.
