I hope that the XX Papua PON would be a momentum for Indonesia’s revival from COVID-19.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chairman of the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) Marciano Norman is optimistic that the XX Papua National Sports Week (PON) would run smoothly and safely on account of more mature preparations.

KONI has ensured that all supporting aspects -- ranging from security and health to the accommodation sectors -- will be taken into account for the success of the biggest sporting event in Indonesia.

"I am optimistic that the PON Papua would become a unifying platform for our nation -- all provincial contingents from all over Indonesia and the people of Papua will unite to celebrate the biggest sporting event in Indonesia," Norman noted here on Thursday.

On the same occasion, KONI highlighted readiness of several aspects that brings optimism in the smooth implementation of the national event.

However, KONI has admitted to the security aspect in Papua being very dynamic, yet the committee is certain that the security units still have matters well under the control.

Moreover, internal security will be provided to the participating athletes by the regional police and military personnel, who will accompany the contingents while staying in the province.

"We have prepared security procedures for emergency measures. Thus, they already know what to do to keep the situation safe," the KONI chairman affirmed.

Furthermore, Norman emphasized that COVID-19 handling measures would be applied strictly.

Prior to their departure, each participant must test negative for COVID-19 through a PCR swab test.

Likewise, upon their arrival in Papua, the participants will be tested again to ensure that they still receive a negative test result.

Furthermore, COVID-19 vaccines have been administered not only to athletes but also to the residents living around the venues of the matches to curb the spread of the disease.

In addition, Norman noted that the vaccination rate in the areas had reached 73 percent.

"I hope that the XX Papua PON would be a momentum for Indonesia’s revival from COVID-19. Considering the implementation of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, which has been going well, thanks to the cooperation of the government and the community, I believe that the XX Papua PON can also realize the great synergy," he added.
