The goal and effort to realize this will not be possible without cross-sectoral cooperation and collaboration.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Member of the House of Representatives' (DPR's) Commission VII Dyah Roro Esti underscored the importance of low-carbon development in a press release here on Friday.

During a virtual discussion titled "Sustainability Action for The Future Economy (SAFE) 2021," Esti highlighted the advantages of this new paradigm, including serving as a concrete step to mitigate climate crisis, which also concerns the economic and social prosperity of Indonesians.

In addition to reducing the production of greenhouse gases by 43 percent, which is higher than the targeted 23 percent in the Paris Agreement, low-carbon development can also create 15 million new jobs, which would also reduce the poverty rate in Indonesia.

During the discussion, she affirmed DPR's commitment to supporting renewable energy development through the Renewable Energy Bill, which acts as a legal framework for the development of renewable energy in Indonesia and as a program to encourage energy transition in the country.

The DPR member noted that discussions were ongoing in the DPR Commission XI regarding carbon tax and a discussion involving multiple commissions and ministries will also ensue.

"The goal and effort to realize this will not be possible without cross-sectoral cooperation and collaboration. Hence, all institutions and ministries play a role in implementing low-carbon development in Indonesia," she expounded.

To this end, Esti, concurrently a commissioner of the Low Carbon Development Indonesia (LCDI), encouraged all parties to unify efforts to reduce the high production of carbon in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, National Development Planning (PPN) Minister/Head of the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) Suharso Monoarfa stated that the government was issuing various policies to drive low-carbon development.

The government had allocated Rp23.45 trillion to Rp34.52 trillion, or 24 percent of the total required budget.

LCDI is a new development platform that aims to maintain economic and social growth through encouraging low greenhouse gas development activity and minimizing the exploitation of natural resources.

It is also designed to support a green investment climate, strengthen cross-sectoral integration in decision making, and make Indonesia the leader in low-carbon development.
