Violence against wives has always remained dominant among the cases of domestic violence in the personal domain, with the violence rate reaching above 70 percent
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Commission on Anti-Violence against Women (Komnas Perempuan) recorded a total of 36,356 cases of domestic violence in Indonesia over the past five years.

“Violence against wives has always remained dominant among the cases of domestic violence in the personal domain, with the violence rate reaching above 70 percent,” Chief of the Komnas Perempuan Monitoring Sub-commission Dewi Kanti stated.

Of the 36,356 cases of domestic violence, 10,669 were related to the personal domain, she told participants of a seminar “Breaking the Chain of Violence and Rehabilitating Victims” streamed live on the commission’s YouTube channel on Monday.

The cases of violence in the personal domain comprised violence against wives, daughters, housemaids, and girlfriends as well as violence involving personal relations, such as relations with former girlfriends and former wives, she revealed.

“Violence against housemaids was ranked the lowest among the cases of domestic violence,” she stated.

Kanti appealed to all related parties to review the implementation of Law No. 23 of 2004 on the Elimination of Domestic Violence since it still encountered several obstacles.

“Through the reflection process, we can work together to adopt steps to break the chain of violence and rehabilitate victims,” she remarked.

Obstacles to the implementation of the law comprised the higher number of victims withdrawing domestic violence reports or complaints, unclear interpretation of article 2 of the law especially related to the scope of households, and the lack of evidence and differences of perspectives with law enforcement officers.

In addition, Kanti opined that provisions on additional penalty and restrictions on perpetrators’ movement and obligation to partake in the counseling program had not been implemented properly.
