"This is a development bolstered by the government. All generations of Papuans should be grateful because this is where the government has prepared facilities for Papuan children," Chairman of PB PON XX Papua Yunus Wonda stated at the Kampung Harapan Sports Complex, Sentani, Jayapura District, Wednesday.
Wonda had officially opened the archery branch of PON XX Papua at the Kampung Harapan Sports Complex.
He stressed that all available sports facilities can be used to coach local athletes. He also expressed optimism that Papua's coaches would become more active in training athletes from an early age.
Furthermore, he is keen that Papua becomes a province that generates creditable athletes that can bring Indonesia's name to the international level.
"This is the moment as all (sports) facilities have been built. Let us all keep and utilize this as best as we can," Wonda noted.
After PON, he revealed that his team will hold several national and international sports events in Papua.
According to Wonda, it aims to ensure that the facilities are not neglected as well as to promote and offer the beauty of Papua.
"It is the standard. (We need to be) proactive to hold events annually, so the facilities that have been built are not abandoned. We urge that all sports branches are nurtured, and many international events will be held," he affirmed.
He also expressed optimism that all matches would run smoothly and safely and would yield the best athletes for Indonesia.
"Today, we have opened archery. We wish that everything would go well and support the event. The most important aspect in all PON matches is that it is a place to unite the nation," he added.
