"Corruption hinders development. Not only physical development but also human resource development," KPK Deputy Chairman Nurul Ghufron said during a working visit to Ambon, Maluku, as revealed in a written statement received here on Wednesday.
Citing an example, he said corruption could prevent children from accessing education. Moreover, alarming and concerning conditions can also occur due to corrupt practices, which could be seen from the poor quality of infrastructure in an area, he added.
"In Indonesia, the governors and heads of districts have not (done anything yet), but the buildings built with the state budget have already tumbled," Ghufron remarked.
The Regional House of Representatives plays an important role in overseeing the government's performance because it also determines the direction and goals of a region's development.
Ghufron highlighted that the Corruption Eradication Commission was present in the regions to oversee the duties of the executive and legislature so that checks and balances could run properly, particularly in the function of the Regional House of Representatives in terms of legislation, budgeting, and supervision.

He then mentioned the types and modes of corruption that often occur in the regions and said that he expected legislators to not resort to them.
"Ladies and gentlemen are public officials, whose job is to serve the community. Don't enrich yourself from unauthorized sources other than the salaries and honorariums that have been regulated," he said.
Speaker of the Maluku legislative body (DPRD) Lucky Wattimury appreciated the anti-corruption agency's working visit to Maluku.
"We welcome this event to strengthen the synergy between KPK and DPRD to eradicate corruption," Wattimury remarked.
He said he expected to encourage development and improve the welfare of the Maluku people in the future, which would be in sync with the efforts of the Corruption Eradication Commission to improve the regional government's management or governance.
