Climate crisis continues to threaten all human beingsJakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani has expressed support for global efforts to implement a green or low carbon development strategy to reduce carbon emissions.
She said she supported the use of renewable energy as part of steps to guide an energy transition to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs).
“Climate crisis continues to threaten all human beings. The commitment to address climate change must be maintained since the climate crisis will have a negative impact on the attainment of SDGs. We must invest for the future so that green economy becomes a common strategy,” she said in a written statement released on Thursday.
She lauded the commitment of 190 countries and international organizations, including Indonesia, to put an end to the era of fossil energy, particularly coal, at the just-concluded 26th Conference of Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland.
She said the COP26 must drive a global commitment to address climate change.
“COP26 must become a global effort to cope with climate change through more inclusive and green development. Hence, the agreement to reduce emissions must really be realized, including in Indonesia,” she said.
Although it will take time for Indonesia, which is highly dependent on fossil fuels, to realize the commitment, the nation must remain optimistic about taking advantage of renewable energy soon for realizing a better world, she said
She highlighted the significance of the carbon emission reduction commitment since the world is now at a “tipping point” in the climate change crisis.
Political will on the part of all countries is needed to raise ambitions for reducing carbon emissions and adapting through a green development strategy, she said.
“The world must stand united to control emissions and thus, cooperation among all countries is needed. The international cooperation must put emphasis on investment in green economy and a disaster resilience system,” she said.
She urged developed nations to assist developing countries in implementing green development.
To stop the use of fossil energy in 2040, Indonesia still needs assistance, she said.
“Developed nations must lead the reduction of carbon emissions and provide financial and technical assistance to support (climate change) mitigation and adaptation in developing countries. We must bequeath a better, secure, just, and prosperous world to future generations,” she remarked.
She said the House will always guide the government’s policies and programs to stop deforestation.
