Jakarta (ANTARA) - General Andika Perkasa must work optimally in leading the Indonesian Military (TNI), House of Representatives (DPR RI) Speaker Puan Maharani has said.

"Congratulations to the candidate for the TNI commander. Hopefully, he can carry out a strategic role in leading the TNI and implementing national defense policies with full responsibility," Maharani remarked here on Monday.

The House of Representatives will soon send a letter of approval for the new TNI Commander to President Joko Widodo, she informed.

With his candidature approved by the House of Representatives, the next stage in Perkasa's appointment as TNI Commander will be his inauguration by the President, she said.

The House Speaker expressed her optimism that General Perkasa will do his best even though his term of office will only be one year.

It is hoped that under General Perkasa's leadership, TNI would get closer with the community, remain the vanguard of national defense, and support the handling of COVID-19 in the country, Maharani said.

"The House of Representatives also believes that General Perkasa can make the TNI more solid, both at the internal level and with other agencies, including the police," she stated.

Earlier, the DPR RI plenary session on Monday approved President Joko Widodo's nomination of General Perkasa as a candidate for TNI Commander.

The House gave its approval after listening to the report of Commission I of the DPR, which held a series of tests for the candidate from Friday–Sunday (November 5–7, 2021).

General Perkasa attended the plenary session and was introduced to members of the House of Representatives. He will replace Air Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto, who is about to retire from service.

The DPR RI plenary session also approved the termination of Tjahjanto's leadership.
