"Hence, fatwas issued by the MUI could serve as a guidance for Muslims to continue their daily religious rituals amid the COVID-19 pandemic," Vice President Amin noted in his speech to open the Indonesia Fatwa Commission's Ulema Meeting VII via teleconferencing from the official residence in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The flexibility of Islamic law during extraordinary times is one of the core tenets of Islam that offers convenience to its adherents, he noted.
MUI fatwas have been widely accepted by Indonesian Muslims, as they offer guidance on how to respond to the ever-changing contemporary situations, Amin remarked.
"Praise be to God, fatwas issued by the MUI have received popular acceptance and played a role in various situations faced by the nation and society," the vice president stated.

The MUI has played its role in devising fatwas to guide Indonesian Muslims in adjusting their religious rituals to prevent the coronavirus infection. The government has also taken into account MUI Fatwas before planning new measures to control the COVID-19 pandemic, he noted.
"The Fatwa Commission's verdict has provided solutions to the government and Indonesian Muslims, thereby relieving them from confusion and difficulties posed by the pandemic," Amin remarked.
The vice president then lauded the role of Ulemas in addressing contemporary issues from an Islamic perspective through the Ulema Meeting.
"I, representing the government and the MUI Advisory Council, expressed my gratitude for the tireless works and efforts made by the Ulemas for producing verdicts and decision that would be beneficial for the Islamic community and the nation," Vice President Amin stated.
