Semarang, Central Java (ANTARA) - Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Chairman Firli Bahuri has urged regional executive and legislative leaders in Central Java to build personal integrity, saying greed, power, and opportunity can lead to corruption.

"Let us maintain the personal integrity that will be a safety net for regional leaders from committing corruption crimes. Everyone can get corrupt, particularly those who have power, chance, and have lost their integrity," he said.

He made the statement when speaking at the integrated corruption eradication coordination meeting attended by the Central Java executive, legislative, and government institution leaders in Semarang on Thursday.

Regional leaders are mandated to discharge five duties: perform obligations for the country, maintain political and security stability, ensure people's safety from disasters and economic threats, ensure convenience in investment and business permit application, and supervise the implementation of the national development program in their respective regions, he noted.

Bahuri also urged regional leaders to evaluate regional development and improvements on regional issues.

Regional authorities should observe the seven indicators of poverty, unemployment, maternal death, infant mortality, human development index, income per capita, and Gini ratio to determine the success of their leadership in enhancing the residents' quality of life, he said.

"Regional leaders must examine and ensure that government policies devised in the regional budget are aimed at enhancing the people's livelihood, and leaders must observe the indicators to plan regional development," he added.

KPK's presence in the coordination meeting was to fulfill its legal obligation to devise a corruption prevention plan, and coordinate and monitor anti-corruption measures, he informed.

"To fulfill the agency's obligation to prevent corruption crimes, KPK has drafted a research to provide recommendations to central and regional authorities on preventing corruption crimes," Bahuri said.

The coordination meeting was part of KPK's activities to commemorate International Anti-Corruption Day, which is celebrated on December 9 every year, he added.
