Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has continued to strengthen surveillance in a bid to anticipate coronavirus infections, the COVID-19 Handling Task Force has affirmed.

"The central government, in collaboration with the Health Office and Education Office in each region, continues to conduct surveillance, both active and passive, to anticipate (COVID-19) cases," spokesperson for the task force, Wiku Adisasmito, said during an online press conference, accessed from here on Tuesday.

An increase in COVID-19 cases has been detected in 126 districts and cities in the country based on Health Ministry data.

The updated data that the Ministry of Health has conveyed is already based on data collected on the safe school and safe madrasa dashboards managed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology and the Ministry of Religious Affairs," Adisasmito said.

In principle, COVID-19 data were collected from the same source, namely data from regions, and processed according to the needs of each ministry and agency for specific decision-making, he added.

The finding of case increases in 126 districts and cities is based on epidemiological investigations from local health offices, he said.

Earlier, Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin had linked the increase in COVID-19 cases in the past three weeks to face-to-face learning in schools and condolence visits.

"Based on observations from the Ministry of Health, last week, there were 126 districts and cities with increasing cases, some of which had increased for three weeks in a row," he said.

According to an in-depth investigation by the Health Ministry, condolence visits and face-to-face learning in schools were the reasons for the increase in COVID-19 cases, he added.

The minister asserted that the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology had sought consolidation to resolve the problem by the end of this week.

The consolidation will encourage more proactive surveillance to allow face-to-face learning to continue to be run, he explained. (Related news: Kalla asks public to remain alert for third COVID wave
