Several problems are still encountered in the implementation of human rights principlesJakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD has called on all Indonesians to work along with the government to push for better application of human rights principles in their day-to-day lives.
"Several problems are still encountered in the implementation of human rights principles. Let us fix it together, as we have to forge ahead. We must not be shackled to where we are now," the minister stated at the opening of the 2021 Human Rights Festival, broadcast on the Semarang City Government YouTube channel, seen here on Wednesday.
Mahfud believes that intolerance, coercion of will, and various problems caused by societal differences were factors that often hindered the implementation of human rights principles in Indonesia.
These differences are not limited to background in the form of ethnicity, religion, or race but also included differences of opinion and views. In fact, Mahfud believes that diversity should be the nation's pride and strength.
"This country must unite and respect pluralism in the nation and state to move together in achieving national goals," he remarked.
The minister also highlighted that development must encourage inclusive economic development and prioritize sustainable aspects, such as inclusive education and health, in addition to building a sense of tolerance and mutual respect.
Thus, Indonesia's development is not solely economy-centric.
"This is a form of the government's responsibility to vulnerable and minority groups, such as women, those with disabilities, and indigenous people," the minister stated.
The minister also listed some aspects that necessitated utmost attention, such as emotional and impulse control, optimism, cause and effect analysis, empathy, and positive achievements.
He urged the central and regional governments, non-governmental organizations, and others to focus on these aspects as a means of building community resilience together, with solidity and solidarity as the key elements.
"This aims to adapt and overcome difficult situations, such as the situation in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic that is sweeping the entire world today," he remarked.
Mahfud noted that the Human Rights Festival themed "Moving Together Strengthening Diversity, Inclusion, and Resilience" is an event that holds relevance and that represents the optimism of the Indonesian people in facing challenges that plague the nation today.
