Apart from the means of public transportation, we must also enhance monitoring on the movement of private vehicles that are generally more difficult to control
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi confirmed that the authority will intensify monitoring on the movement of land and private transportation vehicles during the Christmas and New Year holiday period amid COVID-19 mobility restrictions.

"Apart from the means of public transportation, we must also enhance monitoring on the movement of private vehicles that are generally more difficult to control," Sumadi stated during an audience with members of Commission V of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) here on Wednesday.

The authority has enacted the odd-even plate policy for traffic control for private vehicles in agglomeration areas, toll roads, provincial capitals, tourist destinations, and regions where mobility can potentially increase, he noted.

The odd-even plate rule will be applied in Tangerang-Merak, Bogor-Ciawi-Cigombong, Cikampek-Palimanan-Kanci, and Cikampek-Padalarang-Cileunyi sections of the Trans-Java toll road network from December 20, 2021, to January 2, 2022, Sumadi informed.

The minister also urged regional governments to enact traffic control policies and adjust the mobility control with the actual needs.

"If the odd-even rule is applied, mobility movement might decrease by 30 percent," he noted.

Sumadi also confirmed that capacity restrictions would be applied to public transportation, as operators are instructed to operate only 50 percent of their entire fleet, with maximum capacity restricted to 70 percent for each operating vehicle.

Logistics vehicles are exempt from the mobility restriction, he remarked while adding that local police forces have the discretion to restrict logistics mobility if necessary.

Public transportation operators must also ensure health protocols are enforced and passengers have logged their movement on the COVID-19 contact tracing mobile application PeduliLindungi, he stated.

"The authority would organize spot-checks to examine passengers' travel documents and perform random COVID-19 antigen tests on them," Sumadi stated.
