We have conducted a general evaluation, and we hope that it would be completed this year.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta provincial government aims to complete the construction of 26 thousand infiltration wells by 2021-end as a precautionary measure against floods and puddles during the rainy reason, Jakarta's Deputy Governor Ahmad Riza Patria stated.

According to Patria, over 20 thousand infiltration wells were built this year, while only six thousand are left.

At Sunter Lake Hotel, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, on Tuesday, the deputy governor opined that the infiltration wells program was one of the programs implemented to prevent the formation of puddles during high-intensity rains in Jakarta.

This is because infiltration wells function as temporary reservoirs for rainwater. Before flowing into the river and ocean, rainwater could be stored first in infiltration wells to reduce the formation of puddles.

"You can see it at several places, such as on Fatmawati Street, where puddles are formed every time it rains. Ever since the infiltration well was built, puddles no longer exist," Patria pointed out.

"You can also see it in Lebak Bulus, Karanganyar, and at several other locations. Infiltration wells prevent flooding and puddles at those spots," he noted.

The deputy governor also urged contractors that became the provincial government's partner to build infiltration wells in accordance with the specification stipulated within the regulation.

"What is important is that we do it according to the regulations. We have conducted a general evaluation, and we hope that it would be completed this year," he remarked.

The provincial government will also penalize contractors that have built infiltration wells that failed to align with the specification, he emphasized.

Earlier, Jakarta's Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD) member Agustina Hermanto had criticized flood control policies conceived by the Jakarta authority and suggested cuts on several measures, including the infiltration wells construction program.
