Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin has called for tighter security at all entry points along the Indonesian border to prevent the spread of the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron.

"First, of course, impose stricter security (to prevent) the entry of (Omicron) at various entrances, be it air, sea, or land. Don't let it bypass (security)," the Vice President said in a statement here on Friday.

He also urged people to follow the health protocols in a disciplined manner and to activate the PeduliLindungi application to monitor public movement.

"Secondly, because this (variant) has started to come in, we are enforcing (stricter) health protocols, especially (wearing) masks; then also (the use of) PeduliLindungi," he added.

Amin asked regional governments to remain alert and focus on tracking and testing.

He also sought the acceleration of efforts to increase vaccination coverage so that the Omicron variant can be anticipated without delay.

"And also matters relating to testing and tracing, then this vaccination will be accelerated. In fact, in January (2022), a booster vaccine is going to be implemented. This is important," he stressed.

He also highlighted that the government will impose community activity restrictions according to the conditions of each region for the year-end holidays.

"The level can go up (or) go down. Therefore, maybe until January (the level) will not be lowered. Even though it's not at level three, stricter rules can be imposed," he elaborated.

President Joko Widodo had earlier urged everyone to work together to stem the spread of the Omicron variant in Indonesia.

"What we have to do is collaborate, try our best, so that the Omicron variant does not spread in the country. Do not allow local transmission to occur," the President remarked.
