Jakarta (ANTARA) - Communication and Informatics Minister Johnny G. Plate, here, Tuesday, spoke of targeting to complete the Personal Data Protection Bill by next year after being delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The bill is currently in the discussion stage between Plate's ministry and the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR).

The regulation was targeted to be completed by 2020 but got delayed owing to the pandemic.

In addition, the discussion became drawn out, as the government and DPR had not yet agreed on which authorities should monitor the enforcement of personal data protection.

Plate's ministry opined that monitoring of personal data protection could be conducted under their ministry, while the DPR deemed there should be an independent institution.

The Personal Data Protection Bill became one of the regulations included within the 2022 Priority National Legislation Program (Prolegnas).

"I am thankful that the bill's discussion managed to become a priority agenda once more," Plate remarked.

The minister highlighted the need for this regulation, so that the legal umbrella concerning personal data protection would become stronger.

The law contains a penalty for the violation of personal data protection, such as the unauthorized use of personal data.

"The need for a stronger legal umbrella to ensure the protection of personal data currently becomes important and relevant in Indonesia," he remarked.

While awaiting the completion of this primary regulation, there are regulations concerning personal data protection currently spread out across several ministries and institutions.

Regulation pertaining to personal data protection for the communication sector is currently stipulated in Governmental Regulation No. 71 of 2019 on conducting Electronic Transaction and System.

The details within the governmental regulation are also contained in Communication and Informatics Ministerial Regulation No. 5 of 2020 on Private Electronic System.

"We expect that the Personal Data Protection Law will complement these regulations, so that protection of data owners would truly be preserved," the minister affirmed.
