Earthquakes, of magnitude 2-3, occur almost every day. However, the location of the epicenter of the earthquake moved randomly
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Aftershocks will continue to occur until condition is completely balanced, according to researcher at the Geotechnology Research Center of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Eko Yulianto.

Yulianto noted that the repeated earthquakes in Banten may be several aftershocks of an earthquake of magnitude 6.6 that had struck on January 14, 2022, some 53 kilometers southwest of Sumur Sub-District in Pandeglang District.

"In the several aftershocks that occurred after the earthquake on January 14, 2022, the energy released by the earth's broken crust will gradually decrease until a balanced condition is reached again," Yulianto said when contacted by ANTARA here on Wednesday.

The BRIN researcher remarked that there was no certainty as to when the aftershocks would end. However, in earlier earthquakes, the energy release process usually took several weeks.

Yulianto also explained that the southern Java subduction line (Megathrust Sunda) is an active subduction line, so this route can periodically cause several earthquakes of different scales. The larger the scale of the earthquake, the longer the recurrence period.

"Earthquakes, of magnitude 2-3, occur almost every day. However, the location of the epicenter of the earthquake moved randomly," Yulianto noted.

Coordinator for Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Daryono had explained earlier that the number of aftershocks did not mean it would cause a major earthquake.

Daryono noted that aftershocks were usually of lesser strength than the main earthquake, and their strength would decrease over time and occur less frequently.
