As of 5:35 p.m. WIB, the BMKG noted that there was one aftershock with a magnitude of 3.0 M.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The 5.2-magnitude (M) earthquake that rattled Banten Province on Friday afternoon was caused by the deformation of the oceanic crust of the Indo-Australian Plate, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has informed.

The epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 5:10 p.m. Western Indonesia Standard Time (WIB), was located at 7.48 south latitude and 105.92 east longitude, it said.

It was located 63 kilometers (km) southwest of Bayah sub-district, Lebak district, Banten province, at a depth of 55 km.

"Considering the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the disaster was a shallow earthquake,” Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center of BMKG Bambang Setiyo Prayitno informed in a statement received here on Friday.

A source mechanism analysis showed that the earthquake had a normal oblique fault mechanism, he said. It also had no potential for triggering a tsunami, he added.

The earthquake was felt in Pelabuhan Ratu Sub-district at IV Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI), he said.

People in Malingping, Bayah, Cihara, Panggarangan, Rangkasbitung, and Wanasalam Sub-districts in Lebak District as well as Cikeusik Sub-district in Pandeglang District felt the tremors at a scale of III MMI, he informed.

In addition, the shocks were also felt at a scale of III MMI in Ciptagelar Village and Cireunghas Sub-districts in Sukabumi District, he added.
