Jakarta (ANTARA) - National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has prepared three strategies to anticipate the surge of COVID-19 cases caused by the Omicron variant.

"One of our priorities is to expedite vaccinations," Prabowo said in a written statement received here on Wednesday.

He emphasized that the acceleration of vaccinations must be optimized, especially for the elderly and also people who have received the second dose of the vaccination, to immediately seek the third dose.

The second strategy is to consistently remind the public to implement health protocols during their daily activities.

"We always remind the public to maintain health protocols, most importantly by wearing masks," he added.

Prabowo said that people's negligence in implementing health protocols is causing viruses to be easily transmitted. Whereas in the case of the Omicron variant, the use of masks is very important, considering the transmission rate is faster than the Delta variant.

If vulnerable groups such as the elderly who have comorbidities, and unvaccinated people who were exposed to the Omicron variant, it can cause fatalities.

"Therefore, let us remind each other to keep wearing masks. If necessary, wear double masks, especially in public places. This is to keep us safe," he said.

Prabowo’s third strategy is maintaining the synergy between the central government, National Police (Polri), Indonesia Defense Forces (TNI), regional governments and all elements of society, to continue working together to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Prabowo also hopes that all parties at the forefront in handling COVID-19 will stop reminding the public about the importance of vaccinations to increase immunity amid the new COVID-19 variant.

"The central government, regional governments, and all stakeholders will continue to prepare vaccine outlets and vaccination strategies. We ask people to immediately receive vaccinations for those who have not," Prabowo noted.
