Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) distributed free masks at 47 locations in Jakarta on Monday to prevent COVID-19 spread.

In a written statement issued on Monday, BNPB Head Suharyanto said he directed officials to distribute masks in densely populated areas and target the middle to lower income groups.

For instance, masks were distributed in locations such as marketplaces, villages, and slums, he informed.

Suharyanto, who is also the COVID-19 Handling Task Force chief, said that the mask distribution activity aimed to fulfill the people's demand for masks and bolster health protocol implementation.

The activity was conducted as a part of a three-day mask distribution initiative that has been carried out since Friday and Saturday, he added.

In accordance with the agenda, masks were distributed on Monday morning at 47 locations, including Gambir, Kebon Kelapa, South Petojo, North Petojo, Bungur, Kenari, Kramat, Kwitang, Duri Kosambi, Kampung Bali, and Karet Tengsin, he said.

Masks were also handed out in Serdang, Sumur Batu, Utan Panjang, Ciganjur, Kramat Pela, Melawai, Petogongan, Pulo, Tegal Parang, Cikoko, Duren Tiga, Kalibata, Pancoran, Pengadegan, Rawajati, North Petukangan, Ulujami, Guntur, Karet Kuningan, Karet Semanggi, Menteng Atas, and East Tebet, he disclosed.

Kebon Jeruk, South Kedoya, North Kedoya, Wijaya Kusuma, Glodok, Keagungan, Angke, South Duri, North Duri, Tambora, Tanah Sereal, and Duri Kepa were also covered by the activity, he added.

For the mask distribution, the agency was assisted by the Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Public Order Agency (Satpol PP), the military, COVID-19 Handling Task Force, local officials, and volunteers, he said.

The agency aims to distribute 10 million masks within four months, of which 1.5 million masks will be distributed within three days at 135 locations in Jakarta, he informed.

Each location received donations of 10 thousand masks for residents of villages and for use in public spaces, he added.
